Hamsterley WI – Report of a meeting held on March 8th 2011

WI LogoThe meeting commenced with the singing of Jerusalem. Our President welcomed the members and some visitors.

Apologies were received from Rita Goundry.

In matters arising from the minutes a discussion was held and a team chosen for the County Quiz on Wednesday 30th March. The team will be Sue Davies, Barbara Shuttleworth, Joan McDowell and Ann Richards, with Angela Watson as reserves

The County Competition for a poster describing a local walk was discussed and a small group chosen, including Val, Janet and Ann,to work on this project.

We were pleased to hear that the Hamsterley team came third in the Pub Quiz.

In February, the Marmalade Festival was held at Dalemain House Penrith, and three members entered jars of marmalade.Ann Richards gained a bronze award, Pat Welsh gained a Silver Award and Hilary Jenkins gained two Silver and a Bronze. This has encouraged members to try again next year and perhaps some more entries will be taken. Pat Welsh and a friend went to visit Dalemain on the Festival weekend and found it very interesting.
It is our turn for the Group meeting this Autumn so dates were discussed and preliminary thoughts given to the entertainment.

The County letter was read.

Out Speaker for the evening was Lisa Lane from ‘Loopy Lisa’s Fudge’.
Lisa described how she started her business form home in Loop Lane and sold her first products in Barnard Castle. Going from those small beginnings to making fifty different varieties and selling to many outlets including Fortnum and Mason. The talk was interesting and Lisa fielded many questions. She explained how she experimented with flavours and how they were incorporated into the mixes. How the business eventually moved to a purpose built kitchen with more room and the jobs of the various members of staff. Packaging evolved over the years of trading and the colour co-ordination, display and uniforms are very attractive.
Of course we could not have a talk about something as scrumptious as fudge without having tasters—–deeeeelicious.

Vote of thanks given by Pauline Trotter.

The competition for a Bon-Bon dish was won by 1st,Marie Thompson, 2ND Pat Welsh and 3rd Angela Watson.
The raffle was won by Val Bartlett.
