Hamsterley WI – Report of meeting held on 13th September 2011

WI LogoOur September meeting took place during the high winds, following Hurricane Katia.

Ann Richards, President, welcomed everyone to the meeting.

Anne Walshaw, Secretary, reported that the linear walk along the old Railway Line at Mickleton and Lunch at the Crown in Mickleton in August had been very enjoyable.

The Afternoon Teas served in the Village Hall on 20 August 2011 had been a very successful fundraiser for DCFWI, and Anne thanked everyone who had baked, cooked and attended this event.

The Durham County Federation of WIs’ Autumn Meeting will be held in Bishop Auckland Methodist Church at 11am.  Our delegate will be Janet Embleton.

Our speakers for the September meeting of Hamsterley WI were Ian and Joan Martin, who kindly stepped in at very short notice when the planned speaker could not attend.  Mr and Mrs Martin gave a very interesting talk and slide show on “Trekking in Nepal”.  This couple are dedicated Ramblers and this slide show gave us an insite into the mountain sides and steps they climbed and the scenery they saw during their time in Nepal.  They trekked independently with only their Sherpa and Porter – amazing!

The competition for a Homemade Greetings Card was won by: Joan McDowall; 2. Ann Richards; 3. Pat Welsh.

Pat Welsh invites members and all visitors to our Group Meeting to be held on MONDAY, 26 SEPTEMBER 2011 in Hamsterley Village Hall at 7pm. (£4 payable on the door).  David Williams is providing the entertainment with his slide show on “Serengeti in Tanzania”.  He will be followed by “A One Man Music Hall”.  The Competition for the evening is 3 squares of Almond Slice, from the recipe in the Green WI Recipe Book.

The date of the next meeting is Tuesday, 10 October 2011, which is the AGM.  The competition will be “A savoury item to be eaten at supper”.  (In the meantime, we look forward to seeing you at the Group Meeting to be held on Monday, 26 September at 7pm in Hamsterley Village Hall).

Janet Embleton
