‘With the weather now turning noticeably colder, I note that one of the organisations working with the ‘Surviving Winter’ Appeal is the County Durham Community Foundation.
It is one of many Community Foundations nationwide involved in this campaign.
The objective is to help those who are finding it hard to meet the costs of keeping warm – and while a quarter of the UK population is now officially in fuel poverty (meaning they spend more than 10% of their income on fuel costs) that figure is much higher in Teesdale, where half the population are known to be struggling. The shocking truth is that over 400 people died in County Durham last year as a direct result of the cold weather.
The Foundation can support those in need, and as one way of providing this support it has set up a special fund to receive donations from those who automatically get winter fuel payments but can actually manage without.
You will find the details on this website: http://www.cdcf.org.uk/surviving-winter-appeal.
The County Council also has a page of good advice about how to keep warm at http://www.durham.gov.uk/Pages/Service.aspx?ServiceId=8551.
Best wishes to you all,
