FW: Digital Switchover comes to the North East
To all Parish Councils in the Tyne Tees /North East tv region

Dear Colleagues

I write to introduce myself as the Regional Manager for Digital UK in the Tyne Tees/North East tv region.   Digital UK is the not-for-profit organisation set up by the public service broadcasters to lead and manage the UK switchover to digital television broadcasting.      I am responsible for managing the team based in the North East charged with providing information, advice and help for viewers to ensure that everyone is ready for the switchover.

As I am sure you know, the Tyne Tees/North East tv region, served by the Bilsdale, Pontop Pike and Chatton transmitter groups, is the last region in England to go through the switchover to all-digital television broadcasting.      The switchover will happen in two stages, on 12 and 26 September next year, with analogue BBC 2 being switched off and replaced with BBC digital services on 12 September and all remaining analogue channels being switched to digital on 26 September.

Many parts of the region can receive both analogue and the existing low-power pre-switchover digital services.    Viewers who already have digital television through an aerial will need to retune their televisions, digital tv recorders, Freeview, TopUp TV or BT Vision boxes at both stages of the switchover.    Viewers who receive their television signals from one of the 43 local relay transmitters in various parts of the region can presently only receive analogue services and will only be able to tune in to digital services at the date of switchover.

In order that you can provide information and advice for viewers in your parish, I have attached some information about the switchover which you may care to reproduce and distribute.    If you would like to get supplies of leaflets and more information, please let us know.     We will be contacting local organisations throughout the region as the switchover approaches to help to provide information and advice and the Switchover Help Scheme will be contacting everyone who is eligible for practical help with converting their television.     We will also be arranging roadshows and information days as the date of switchover approaches and will be in contact directly with parishes in areas served by the local relay transmitters to provide more assistance.

I shall send you regular monthly updates on progress towards the switchover and hope that you find the information useful.    If you would prefer not to receive these updates, please reply to this e-mail with “unsubscribe” in the subject line.     The attached information is in the form of portable document format (.pdf) files.    In order to read these files you need to have Adobe Reader on your computer.   You can download this free of charge at http://get.adobe.com/uk/reader/

With all best wishes
Yours sincerely
