The talk was given by Sue Davies and the topic ‘Earthquakes,Glaciers and Guanacos’
Sue and her husband Chris travelled to Chile in 2011 just about the time of their strong
earthquake 7.5 on the Richter scale. During this visit they went to stay with friends and
experienced many after shocks and quakes between 4.5 and 6.9. They watched from
high in the apartment building where they were staying as people and cars were moved
to higher ground for safety with the threat of an impending Tsunami which thankfully
never came. As they watched the chandelier in the apartment shook and some of the
tall buildings were swaying but no great damage.
There were many amazing sights to see and interesting people to meet.Experiencing
Santiago Airport where buildings were closed because of the quake and the efficiency
of the people in erecting temporary marques to keep the passengers flowing through.
The wonderful sight of sunrise over the Andes whilst flying.
A very interesting and colourful account, thank you Sue.
The Vote of thanks was given by Ann Walshaw.
The raffle was won by Claire Sammut.
The competition for an ‘Unusual New Year resolution’: 1st Hilary Jenkins, 2nd Angela Watson.
The next meeting is on 12th February 2013 at 1.30pm.
New members and visitors are always welcome.
