Hamsterley WI – Report of meeting held on 14th May 2013

WI LogoAnn Richards gave a report about a recent fly fishing trip she had enjoyed with three other members of Hamsterley WI.  They went fly fishing to Witton Lakes and had a wonderful day’s tuition from Mr Johnson.  They are hoping to arrange another day’s fly fishing at end of July 2013 and would welcome anyone interested to take part with them.

Members who took part in the recent WI County Quiz had good fun.

Gillian Rutter gave a report on the County WI AGM.  She gave details of the new WI Guide which has been put together nationally to keep a consistent image of the WI and to attract new members.  This year’s County Fundraiser is a Raffle.  Gillian especially enjoyed the performance by John White, who was dressed as King Henry VIII and brought history to life with his stories about his six wives.

Anne Walshaw took names of members who would be interested in representing the WI in the Hamsterley Village Hall Community Mosaic Project.

Members discussed the National WI Resolution about the decline of the High Street.

All the members at the meeting were in support of using small businesses on the high street, but some people felt this resolution could have come too late as many small shops on Britain’s high streets have already gone.  Some members felt that car parking fees contribute to the loss of shops in the town’s high streets and suggested that locally there should be 2 hours free car parking to shop at local high street shops.

Hamsterley WI has organised an outing to Saltair on Wednesday, 5 June 2013.  Everyone is welcome, there are still some spaces available on the coach.

For further details please contact Sue Davies Tel: 01388 488524.

Hamsterley WI has also organised a trip to Chillingham Castle or Chillingham Cattle, the choice is yours, on Wednesday 10 July 2013.  There are some spaces available on the coach and everyone is welcome.  Further details can be obtained from Sue Davies Tel: 01388 488524.

Results of the Savoury Dish Competition were (1) Angela Watson; (2) Marie Thompson; (3) Carol Elliott.

The winner of the raffle was Ann Richards.

The next meeting of Hamsterley WI will take place at Hamsterley Village Hall at 7pm on Tuesday, 11 June 2013.  The Guest Speaker is Lynn Dent talking about The Gentle Art of Knitting.  The competition will be A Craft Item.  All visitors are welcome.
