Christine Raymond, from Wolsingham WI thanked members for an enjoyable time as our delegate to the National WI AGM. She gave a very comprehensive account of her time at the meeting held in Cardiff. Next year’s National AGM will be held in Leeds.
Members were reminded about the Craft exhibition at WI House on 12 and 13 July 2013 to which members of the public are welcome.
Ann Richards reported that the trip to Saltair was very pleasant and the weather favourable. Regrettably the outing to Chillingham Castle has changed its date to Tuesday, 23 July 2013 because the original date clashed with the play “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Durham” which will take place on Wednesday, 10 July 2013. There are still spaces on the coach to Chillingham Castle for the public and details can be obtained from Sue Davies Tel: 01388 488524.
Members were invited to bake cakes for the Hoppings and some members offered.
Barbara Shuttleworth asked members if they had any Books to give to the Hoppings Bookstall. The Hoppings will be held on Sunday, 25 August 2013.
The planned guest speaker was unable to attend the meeting, so at short notice Barbara Beveridge from Leazes Dairy Preserves came and talked about her homemade jam and pickles. She was a delight to listen to. She gave us a humorous talk on her career, from first being a student at Houghall College, to working for the Ministry of Agriculture, to visiting farms as a milk tester and later running a dairy farm with her husband. She has turned her hobby of making her Jams and Pickles into a small business. Members were treated to a taste of Apple Chutney; Mango Chutney; Carmelised Onion; Marmalade; Bramble Jelly, on Crackers, Tea cake and Flapjack. The evening was really enjoyable.
The competition for a Craft Item was won by: (1) Pauline Trotter (2) Angela Watson
(3) Barbara Shuttleworth who also won the raffle.
The next meeting will take place in Hamsterley Village Hall on Tuesday, 9 July 2013 at 7pm. It is Members Night and the competition is “An item of Royal Memorabilia”.
