Hi, Kathleen

I have just spotted your posting about Ravensford Farm, where Thomas Race was living in 1911. Yes, we know a great deal about its history, back to 1660. If you get in touch with me at peacock@mortonhodson.co.uk we can talk about it.

Hi Clare,
I came across your enquiry while I was studying the Hamsterley website. I am researching my family and have connections on my mother's side to the village, in particular to Plane Tree House, High House and Pond House. Mum's surname was Jewitt. Her grandfather was George Robert Garret, born 1865 and her grandmother was Mary Bradley born 1865. The names and places are very close and may suggest a connection. You can see the Braney Family Tree on Ancestry co.uk. Please have a look and let me know what you think.
Kind regards,Peter

I am lead to believe that Percival Blacket (my 10 x gt grandfather) was a church warden at Hamsterley and was born there c1582. Some sources state that his father was Christopher Blacket whilst others say John. Does the church still hold any records to confirm this matter?
Many thanks for your help.

Hi Jonathan. The information I found was on: britishsurnames.co.uk which said Liddle was, in 1881,"top surname by occurrence" and there were 17, followed by Hodgson, 16 & Henderson, 15. With regard to my family, my G.G.Grandfather, Joseph Liddle was born in Butterknowle in c.1810. He married Ellen (Eleanor) Myers, b.c.1816, Bishop Auckland. However I came across a marriage of Joseph "Little" to Ellen Myers, 1832, by Banns at a church(??)in Hamsterley. Also in 1841 Census there is a Joseph "Little" and Ellen and their children, address given as Wham, Lynesack and Softly. The details given all seem to tally with later info. I have for Joseph Liddle and his family. i.e.children, dates, etc. Unfortunately, I can't say for certain that the 2 other "Littles" in the 1841 census at Lynesack, (John age 60 & Christopher age 25) are related or not even tho' Christopher "Little" is shown as witness to the Hamsterley marriage. So, Joseph's brother and father?? .Not sure!
Hope I've not been too long winded,

You may have it the jackpot (which one?) but it will involve a lot of research (and some luck, I suspect). In the 18th century the major Bedburn estate of Hoppyland was owned by an Anthony Leaton, so is that the family? My own information does not go back far enough, but I would be happy to share what little I know if you contact me on peacock@mortonhodson.co.uk

I hate to be unhelpful, but I have to say I disagree with your published source. The only Liddles I have are Edward, who had a holding in Lynesack in 1757 and William, who held West Rackwood Hill farm in 1841. Here the common names include Hodgson, Garthorn, Hall, Amory, Heslop Raine and so on.
Is it possible your book was referring to the other Hamsterley, on the Tyne?
If you gave me some more information about your own family I would see if I could help. You can get in touch with me on peacock@mortonhodson.co.uk

I read recently that Liddle was the most numerous surname, in Hamsterley, in the 1881 Census. I am searching my family history, I’ve found it is linked very much to the area. I wondered if there was anyone who might have any information about the Liddle Family and could help.

Thank you Frank for your reply, My Grandmother's name was Sarah Race nee Beadle, and Im
presuming she was the aunt Sally you refer to. My son and I have only recently started to trace
family history and I was very interested on your comments.

Dear Kathleen,
I'm related to your family through my grandmother Edith Stephenson (1883-1922) who married Frank Sanderson in 1904 in Hamsterley. I haven't done much research on the connection but I believe it's through my grandmother's family - Simpson/Beadle (sometimes misspelled as 'Bedale'). I have a photograph of Aunt Sally Race on horseback.
I would be interested in learning more about the connection.

Further to my previous question, my aunt and uncle were Emma and Sylvester Blackett, and
when I was a child I used to visit them at their smallholding in Redford.
