He writes: “This photograph is of the Cross Keys around 1900 when it was under the management of Tom Stephenson and his wife, my great aunt Alice (nee Kirkup, b 1877). That’s them standing with their children in the doorway. When I visited Hamsterley in 1996 a larger version of this photo was still hanging in the Cross Keys.”
