What’s new?

We try each year to incorporate new things to make it interesting for all, so new for this year is:

  • One Man and his Dog (Sheep-dog trials throughout the day
  • How Does Your Garden Grow (a chance to show off your gardening skills)
  • Produce competition (from cakes to corned beef pie)
  • Poetry competition (delight us with your words)
  • Hog roast

…and this year we are not organising a formal tug-o-war competition, however the rope and volunteers will be available on the day should people want to have a pull-off. Instead, we are focusing on developing the races for all ages in the style of  “It’s a Knockout”.

On top of this we have all the usual great things such as Scarecrow competition, Children’s fancy dress, Scrufts, Sideshows and Games, Stalls, Tea rooms, Vintage Vehicle and Tractor display and Middleton and Teesdale Silver Band www.middletonband.org.uk.

(Information on Hoppings 4 (2010) and Hoppings 1854 are now on the History/Hoppings page and images for Hoppings 4 are on the Gallery/Hoppings 4 and Gallery/Scarecrows pages.)

Latest News

John Stephenson writes:
‘Julie and I have volunteered to run the bookstall for the Hoppings, but the stock from last year has been sold, as it could not be stored in the Sunday School. If anyone has books/jigsaws/games they no longer require could you ask them to phone us on 488420 and we will arrange to collect?
Many thanks.’

Volunteers

Hoppings4JE 15W 217x300 Hoppings 5Last year over 45 people from the Village volunteered in some way either in the organisation of the Hoppings, or on the day. Without volunteers we cannot run the event (you should see the Health and Safety requirements around this event!).

If you have some time either before the event or on the day and wish to volunteer please contact Helen Kirby on 01388 488467.

Stalls

Hoppings4JE 29W 300x210 Hoppings 5In previous years we have spent days trying to generate interest from stalls, much like the ones you see at the Farmers’ Markets. These hours spent were never very fruitful and indeed the feedback we get from visitors to the event is that they love the local stalls e.g. the Tombola, the bric-a-brac, second hand books, locally produced crafts, etc.

If you would like a stall at the event please download and complete the Stall Application Form (PDF format 61kb) and return it to Julieanne Weir at 4 Saunders Avenue, Hamsterley.

If you have any questions please just give her a call on 01388 488187.

Donations

It costs well over £1000 to run this event each year. Given the current financial climate we are not going to be actively contacting people to ask for donations, but that is not to say that we don’t need them!

If you would like to donate please contact Peter Christensen on 01388 488091, or download our Scarecrow and Gardening Competition Application and Donation Form (PDF format 49kb).

We also have a number of gifts donated from last year that we are going to raffle, so look out for tickets. Prizes range from getting your horse new shoes to a night in a hotel!

Fundraising

In previous years any funds gained from the event have been split in three ways, a proportion is kept to fund the next Hoppings, some has been given to Charity e.g. Help for Heroes, Air Ambulance, and some to support the Village e.g. last year the Village Hall received donation to help with maintenance costs of this fantastic resource.

Screen shot 2011 07 01 at 11.45.12 Hoppings 5This year, again we will need to keep some back for future operational costs, but we have also nominated this year’s charity as the Butterwick Hospice. Many of you will know that they do a fantastic job in providing support to people and their families affected by cancer. We are also keen to keep a proportion to support Village activities. Suggestion has been made to try and enter Britain in Bloom, for example. If though, you have other ideas for the Village then please let us know!

Below are details of each competition and application forms to download and complete.
