For those who may not know, the Monday Club meets on the third Monday of the winter months (October to March), excluding December. It was founded in response to a legacy left to the village by Audrey Wethered, who had moved to Hamsterley in her old age and who had found such a warm welcome here that she wanted others to enjoy the sort of friendly get-togethers that she herself had experienced.
Thanks to her generosity, all Monday Club events are free and all residents young and old are welcome to attend. The only guarantee is that no two events will be the same, so the topics covered in the past have ranged from wildlife to gardening, from behind the scenes at Raby Castle to archaeological finds in the mud of the River Wear, from polar bears in Alaska to solar-powered rickshaws in India, and from craft sessions to quizzes.
Each talk lasts about 40 minutes, followed by ‘themed’ refreshments (also free) and plenty of chat before people head home around 9pm.
By the way, helpers to clear up are always very welcome!
